I love combining geometric shapes with hand-written type and funky color schemes. I don't know why...I just do! Happy Monday y'all!
Happy National Cheese Fondue Day! I totally went 90s on this design...Think I'm watching too much X-files. HA!
Still on my The Martian kick. Also, we're starting to see sprouts in our garden! How exciting!
Have you read The Martian? Read it! I love it! But I'm a space junky. I wish I had the brain to be a scientist! NASA said the book (not the movie) is about 95% accurate to space life! Incredible that a non-astronaut author could be so accurate...he must have done loads of background research. Give it a read!
A lot of my ideas come while I'm reading. I'm not sure why, maybe my brain gets bored and goes for a thought wander...but I love books and have been trying to increase my reading time a bit more. It takes away from screen time and helps me get lost in my own imagination. Gaudi's beautiful creations were inspired by science and biology mixing with art. He created the perfect marriage. There's something about science that can sometimes create the best inspirations.
Being a small business owner is no cake walk! Last year, I picked up a few contracts to save for our wedding. I can't tell you how much I missed being my own boss. But that said, there's a certain feeling of security while working contract. Paychecks are regular, you have people around you to socialize with, you learn a different style and best of all, your schedule coordinates with everyone elses schedule in your life. But after a while, I felt my creativity sliding and I craved the freedom I had when it was just me and lamp business. My days were long. I'd wake up early to fill orders or do admin things, my nights were full of either wedding planning or more orders. There was no room for creative thought. I missed folding for fun. I missed my creativity. As a result, I cut back on working on lamps until our wedding and until my contract ended. It's hard to admit defeat like that. But I wasn't happy and my priority at the time was making sure we had enough money for our wedding. It wasn't all bad though. I did enjoy working in the graphic design medium again. And that inspired me to bring the business into a new direction. It's going to take time, energy, dedication and dash of creativity to get there but I can't stop and won't stop creating. It's just in my blood.
Ain't that the truth! This week I'm trying to teach myself how to make my own screen for screen printing....Ahhhh! Wish me luck!
This quote has resonated with me for the past few months. Creativity takes thought, it takes hard work and inspiration. Sometimes you need to be a hermit, to relax, let the brain switch off, and to slowly to let the creative juices flow again.
It's been quite a while since I've written here. Since then, I've explored the paper dye, found new folding patterns for lamps, created paper candles, picked up a few more contracts, taught a series of workshops, got married and went on our honeymoon! It's been quite a year!
But I'm back and I'm back with a vengeance and some new ways at the looking at the business. We're going to keep our focus on paper but shift it a little. Our lamps will be more DIY products (things for to learn how to make) and we'll be adding some stationary to our shop. I'll also use this platform as a place to share the design work we've been doing for the past year and continue to do. There's much more to come. Stay tuned! Happy Leap Year Monday!
